Choosing the perfect pergola for your requirements and budget can be a little challenging, especially because there are so many options available today. Here are some aspects to keep in mind:

1. Material

You can choose between materials such as wood (Cypress or Pressure Treated), vinyl, aluminum or Fiberglass,

Wood

  • Cypress - is very stable and resists splintering and warping very well, making it ideal for outdoor applications, Cypress trees generate cypressene, a natural oil that acts as a preservative and insect repellent. The grain can be highlighted with the application of a clear sealer or it can be left to weather naturally, approaching a dark grey over time. Cypress accepts paints and stains readily, which can open up opportunities for more color variations.

  • Cedar - cedar offers a better value for performance than any other type of wood. Cedar is weather, mildew, warp, and pest resistant. As like Cypress, Cedar is all natural with no preservatives and additives making it environmentally friendly.

  • Pressure Treated wood - is a less expensive option but is long-lasting. It’s treated with a copper-based pesticide which repels insects and rot, but the treatment leaves little indentations along the surface of the wood which are visible even after painting or staining.

Vinyl -  If you choose a vinyl product, you won’t have to worry about maintenance or deterioration. Vinyl pergolas don’t chip, peel, splinter, warp, rot, fade, or become discolored. Plus, they aren’t treated with harmful chemicals, making them safe for your family and the environment.

Aluminum - are very efficient and hassle free and hence make a great backyard decorative. Aluminum is metallic and offers a smooth finish. There are no worries of rotting or decaying of material, nor any requirements of frequent polishing and painting. The aluminum pergolas are weather resistant and can withstand sun and rains for long period of time. Painting the aluminum pergola once in a while is recommended to keep it looking new and shining. Cleaning aluminum pergolas is also easy. They just need a quick pressure wash or wipe down with a cleaner to make them shine up.

Fiberglass - comes in many different colors. Since the material is naturally corrosion resistant, it won’t rust, corrode or pit, regardless of the environment it’s in. Maintenance is as simple as a yearly power wash. Fiberglass is very strong, so fiberglass beams can span longer distances than vinyl or wood
